Ear Piercing

Where's the best place to go?  How do I care for newly pierced ears?  Will it hurt?  I had the same questions when I first got mine pierced.  I will answer these questions and give you tips on what is best.

Claire's Boutique specializes in ear piercing.  They also have a wide variety of starter earrings and regular earrings that you can purchase. (If you don't like getting your ears pierced in the middle of a mall, this is probably your best bet!)  Their gold starter earrings can be a bit expensive, but they are the best quality and especially good for sensitive ears.

Nickel is the most common kind of jewelry metal that you can be allergic to.  If you are allergic to nickel, you should stay away from the Sensitive Solutions that are seen at Claire's.  They are made from stainless steel which is good quality but it contains nickel.  One way to see if you are allergic to it, is to grab a nickel coin and rub it on your lobe.  Don't touch your ear after that, and see if there is red or a rash later on.

If you're wondering if it will hurt, the answer is yes!  If you don't feel like you could take the pain, or are worried about it, don't be stressed.  The Claire's workers are very nice and caring to their customers.  Claire's uses a earring gun which is never used on anyone else and always thrown away afterward.  The girls working there always wash their hands and use plastic gloves which are always disposed of properly.  They will mark your lobe with a marker and they even let you see if that's where you want it.  The pain is strong in the beginning but afterward it burns so they put some of their solution on it to slow the pain.  By the time you're out of the shop, most of the pain has already passed!

Caring for the ears is extremely easy and vital.  If you don't follow their instructions, you are most likely to get an infection, which can be very painful.  Just because you follow their instructions, though, doesn't mean that your ear will heal correctly.  Some people just aren't able to have metal in their ears!  When you get them pierced, they will give you their solution which is free of cost.  Each time you clean your ears you should squeeze some droplets onto a cotton ball (If you buy jumbo size cotton balls tear it in half so you use less solution).  Push the earring from the back upwards so the metal can be seen.  Then, dab the wet cotton ball all around the front of the ear and then on the back.  Squeeze the remaining solution on the cotton ball on your ear and then move the earring back and forth and slowly twist it.  Many people say that twisting your earring can cause an infection but it actually helps the solution get into the ear.  Do this 2-3 times a day in the first three weeks.  Later, you can cut it down to once or twice a day to reduce the amount of solution you're using.  Also, Claire's says to keep you're starter earring in for at least six weeks but they are most likely not fully healed.  I would keep them in at least nine weeks before taking them out.

Hope this helped!

Daphne
